Has my iOS device (iPad, iPhone, iPod) been infected with Malware?
Probably not.
What happened?
Since the introduction of the App Store in 2008 there have been 4 (out of 1.4 million) applications found to have code that was considered to be malicious. That compares to 33% of applications discovered in the Android Market Place – you know, the one used by all your mates that have Samsung phones – since it opened its doors in 2008.
Last week it was discovered that some developers (mostly in China) have been writing apps using a pirated (and infected) copy of Xcode. The end result are some 4000+ applications in the AppStore that have this Malware built in.
Who is affected?
Anyone who has the infected app installed on their iOS Device. However this is mainly in China and the Asia market and there is very little to suspect you have any of these infected apps. Looking through the list I have only recognised WeChat, PDF Reader and Angry Birds 2 as apps that could have made it to these shores.
What are the risks?
The infected apps can steal passwords, monitor calls and send data offshore to, well, God Knows who.
What can you do?
Apple have already removed these apps from the store. Check your iOS Device against this list and delete any you find. Then update your phone to iOS 9.0.1 and this will kill anything inside that might be lurking.
Please remember, if you don’t have any of these apps installed on your iOS device (and there is a very good chance you won’t) there is nothing to worry about.
