You might be getting the impression that lately I am posting a lot about passwords. And you’d be right. I am determined that 2025 will be the year that passwords for my clients will be easy and secure.
An increasing number of you are using our Password service and that’s great but regardless of whether you have, or are planning to, or have done it yourself your Mac login password is now more important that ever.
The Passwords app from Apple is linked to your login password and so if its easy to guess then ALL your passwords are exposed.
With that in mind I’d like to suggest the following.
Your password doesn’t need to something like G4l@xy-St4r$h1p-ExPl0r3r!Un1t2025 but it needs to be better than your name, even if you’ve added an !. Remember this needs be something you’d be happy to enter a dozen times a day but not easily guessed but you won’t forget it. This, in lots of ways, is one of the most important passwords you have.
There is also a trend to put passwords on post-it notes and stick it on the front of the Mac… obviously this is not a good idea.
About now, I bet your wondering “how do I change the password on my Mac?”.
Funny you should ask.
1. Click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings.
2. In the sidebar, click on Users & Groups.
3. Select your user name (or if its a newer mac you might need to click on the little “i”) and click Change Password.
4. Enter your current password in the Old Password field.
5. Enter your new password in the New Password field, and then enter it again in the Verify field.
6. Optionally, you can enter a hint to help you remember the password. (but don’t make it obvious)
7. Click Change Password to finalise the process
