Making Safari better

More and more people are buying laptops these days and they have small screens – as well as other deficiencies that don’t make for ideal desktop computers.

In addition to this, Apple have, seemingly, abandoned the 27 inch iMac so the biggest screen you can look forward to on a desktop is 24 inches.

This is definitely a trend and will only turn around after Apple have launched the iStamp – a super computer that has a screen the size of a 27c stamp and of course, no input ports.

Then, as always, the trend will reverse and screens will take up an entire lounge room wall…but until then how do you maximise your browsing experience on these ever shrinking screens?

In Safari there are at least two things that might help and they are conveniently all in the same place.

Zooming In and Out

When browsing you can use the Command and + key to make the page bigger.

You go from this:

to this

Further you can make this a default if you like your pages just that little bit up close and personal.

Simply Control click in the address bar and select choose the settings for (the site you are currently visiting.)

Not only can you set the zoom on the page but also choose what resources the website can access (camera, mic, ect). Just keep in mind, if you turn these off then sometimes the site will not work as intended.

Reader mode and Content blocking

In most websites advertising can not only reduce the important real estate but also be a distraction. So while in the choosing settings for menu, you’ll notice that Content can be turned off and the Reader function can be turned on reducing the clutter on the pages. So by turning on Enable content blockers as well as reader mode (as per above) you can go from this…

… to this…

Happy surfing
